Rhiannon's best known myth can be found in the Mabinogion, the ancient Welsh stories, but there are indications that Rhiannon is an ancient Goddess older than the Mabinogian tales.

The Goddess as lover, Rhiannon is celebrated at the Beltaine Sabbat on 1st May. At Beltaine when the veils are thin we travel with Rhiannon between the Worlds to gain inspiration, for soul retrieval and for healing. With Rhiannon's energy dominant at this time, it is a good time to reflect upon or use the power of our sacred sexual natures.

Rhiannon is linked to sexual love, white horses and birds which all play a part in her mythology. Rhiannon's energies are those of sexual love, self love and the transformative power of sacred union. She is the epitome of pure Love and this beautiful aspect of the Great Goddess responds only to love. To commune with Rhiannon is to learn to love who you are in completeness. Be warned, Rhiannon's energy demands great respect and rites in her name must be performed from the heart and with the up most respect and honor.

As Queen of the Fairies Rhiannon lives beyond the veil. We are told that the way into Rhiannon's world is through the doorways of the Fairy Mounds and hills such as those at Newgrange and Knowth in Ireland. It is likely you will meet Rhiannon at Beltaine in places with fairy connections such as magic valleys, fairy hills, dells and valleys.

Rhiannon is also known as the First Horse Ancestor which is another reason why white mares are so sacred to Her. She is also the White Mare of the sea of our emotions and emotional love and can be called upon to balance our emotions when in turmoil.

Rhiannon's Ritual of Love

Around the time of Beltaine (1st May) take yourself to a space where you will not be disturbed, preferably outdoors somewhere natural - any fairy related place will be ideal! Take with you a gift for Rhiannon. Make yourself comfortable, close you eyes and center yourself by taking a few deep breaths. Draw your attention to your physical body and actively relax all of your muscles. Now take two or three minutes to sit in silence before you begin.

Place your hands on the Earth and say, "Rhiannon Queen of the Fey Folk, White Mare Anscestor, Lady of Love, I call to you from the Earth". Then raise your hands upwards to the sky and say "Rhiannon of the Birds, Rider between Worlds I can to you from Heaven". Then place your hand on your heart and fill yourself with Love and say "Rhiannon, Goddess of Sacred Union, Goddess as Lover" my heart pours out to you and I call to you in Love, come unto me so that I may know you in me".
Now continue to be filled with the love of Rhiannon for a while.

In this loving state ask to be shown those parts of yourself you do not love. Allow these parts of yourself to flow through your minds eye, then see them sprout wings like golden birds as they fly away from you. Spend some time doing this and really look at what it is about yourself you do not like. When you are ready, begin to visualise a beautiful pink white light surrounding you. You can hear the sound of hooves and the warm breath of the White Mare is on your neck. Now surround yourself in this light, breathe it into your body and your mind and your spirit, fill yourself up cell by cell!

Before you return to waking state see the energy of Rhiannon fading, offer the Goddess your love and flowers from your heart. Now center yourself and ground yourself in the physical by growing roots into the Earth. Welcome back.

Before you leave this place leave your offering for Rhiannon.
